When I remember the people of influence in my life Jack is at the top of my list. He was my Sunday School teacher when I was a diffident junior in high school. (1966). I asked him snarky questions and he plowed ahead with his lesson. Caring for high school students wasn't a duty -- it came from the heart. When Jack and Judy invited me on a camping trip to the Gore Wilderness up by Marble, Colorado I really began to appreciate who Jack was. There was: Math teacher mentor Jack -- who loved his students and who taped paper to the front of the students desks so he wouldn't have to look at the immodest leggy girls fearless explorer Jack. He would laugh while driving on impassable roads as I cowered on the floor of the jeep. And once when caught in a blizzard he drove with the door open peering down at the road. As long as their was snow under the tires we weren't over the edge of Loveland Pass. Jack the tease happily throwing crickets or snow down my shirt. Which only meant I served him a WLT for lunch. (Worm (fried), lettuce, and tomato sandwiches.) He might tease saying-- "you worthless thing" but he never treated anyone like they were worthless thing. We all knew how much we mattered to him. Athletic Jack -- ready to teach me (or anyone) tennis, skiing, fly fishing and even how to caddy at golf. I talked too much so the caddy thing never worked for me or him. Father and husband Jack -- whose love for his wife and kids was palpable Disciple Jack -- Jack was a man of integrity --committed to God, Truth, students and kingdom purposes. He loved God and his neighbor as himself. My gratitude for Jack and Judy can't be put into words. They set their love on a high school girl and it changed her view of herself, her worth and her God. Jack treasured people. He encouraged, mentored, and gave vast swaths of time to others. Jack was not particularly sentimental, but deep down nothing you said or did could stop his caring. Not worm sandwiches. Not soaking all the labels off the canned goods in the kitchen. Not sass. Not nothin! I imagine that he will be delighted to breathe the pure celestial air, reach out and touch the hand of his Maker and see the face beloved of all faces. It will mean he can go farther up and further in to the God he loved. Jack I can't wait to see you again. Adele a.k.a "punkin"
